Intent, Implementation and Impact

 

 

Intent

At Tiptoe Primary School the intention is to provide a high- quality Design Technology education that engages and inspires pupils to develop a love of Design Technology to inspire and develop their skills. In addition to this we will give all children the opportunity to participate in a variety of DT experiences and, where possible, perform to a wider audience than the school.

 The National Curriculum suggests that, it is an inspiring, rigorous and practical subject. Using creativity and imagination, pupils design and make products that solve real and relevant problems within a variety of contexts, considering their own and others’ needs, wants and values.

At Tiptoe Primary School we aim to offer a broad range of subject knowledge and draw on disciplines such as mathematics, science, computing and art. Pupils learn how to take risks, becoming resourceful, innovative, enterprising and capable citizens. Through the evaluation of past and present design and technology, they develop a critical understanding of its impact on daily life and the wider world. High-quality design and technology education makes an essential contribution to the creativity, culture, wealth and well-being of the nation.

We will achieve this by:

  • Through a variety of creative and practical activities, the children will be taught the knowledge, understanding and skills needed to engage in an iterative process of designing and making.
  • They will work in a range of relevant contexts (for example, the home and school, gardens and playgrounds, the local community, industry and the wider environment).
  • When designing and making, the children will be taught to design purposeful, functional, appealing products for themselves and other users based on design criteria.
  • The children will communicate their ideas through talking, drawing, templates, mock-ups and, where appropriate using computers.
  • The children will use a range of tools and equipment to perform practical tasks (for example, cutting, shaping, joining and finishing).
  • They will explore and evaluate a range of existing products, evaluate their ideas and products against design criteria.
  • The children will be taught to evaluate their designs and to use mechanical systems in their products, such as gears and pulleys.
  • Cooking.
  • The children will be taught how to cook and apply the principles of nutrition and healthy eating. Learning how to cook is a crucial life skill that enables pupils to feed themselves and others affordably and well, now and in later life.
  • The children will be taught the principles of a healthy and varied diet, prepare and cook a variety of dishes using a range of cooking techniques and know where and how a variety of ingredients are grown, reared, caught and processed.

Implementation

The Design and Technology curriculum ensures all children in school have access to a varied programme, which allows them to discover areas of strength, as well as areas they might wish to improve on. These include using different techniques and media to engage, inspire and challenge pupils. This is embedded in the classroom and outdoor learning opportunities.

Impact

Whilst in school, children have access to a varied programme, which allows them to discover areas of strength, as well as areas they might like to improve upon. Through Design and Technology many children gain a sense of achievement, self- confidence and have time to reflect. Through Design and Technology this will broaden the children’s knowledge and skills to enhance independence and confidence through their lives.
